Roanoke County Traffic Warrants Explained
Roanoke County GDC handles traffic infractions, traffic misdemeanors, and county ordinance matters, except juvenile cases. A missed traffic date does not automatically create a warrant in every case. The charge and summons determine which Virginia rule applies.
Section 19.2-258.1 says the court may hear a traffic infraction in the person's absence after a failure to appear and shall not issue a warrant for that infraction under § 46.2-938. Other summons noncompliance can follow a different path.
Roanoke County Traffic Warrant Infraction Rule
Virginia separates traffic infractions from other summons cases. Under § 19.2-258.1, an infraction may be heard without the person present after a failure to appear, and the court shall not issue a warrant for that infraction under § 46.2-938. Do not read every missed traffic date as an arrest warrant.
Section 46.2-938 separately covers failure to comply with a summons or notice and permits a warrant in that circumstance. Ask GDC which charge and procedure appear on the case before choosing a payment or appearance route.
The General Assembly's Code page gives the summons and warrant rule.
The rule is about a court summons and its response, not a general driving-history search.
Roanoke County Traffic Warrant Search Steps
Start with OCIS or the local GDC case search using the name on the citation, case number, or hearing date. Select Roanoke County GDC for a local case. A GDC example format is GT########-##, a pattern only, not a real citation number.
If the entry is unclear, the clerk can confirm whether the matter is an infraction, misdemeanor, capias, show cause, or other process. County Police Warrants and JustFOIA are fallback channels, not substitutes for the issuing court.
- Search Virginia OCIS by name, case number, or hearing date, selecting Roanoke County where available.
- Use the local GDC search and choose Current, Archived, or All if an older case may be involved.
- Call GDC Clerk at 540-387-6168 to ask whether a missed date created a warrant, capias, or show-cause order.
- Call Police Warrants at 540-777-8617 for its list; after hours the directory gives 540-562-3265.
- Request an existing record through County FOIA if the clerk or Police cannot provide it. Ask counsel before appearing.
Roanoke County Traffic Warrant Search Fields
The local GDC interface lets a reader search by party name, case number, or hearing date after selecting the court. The name route requires a last name. First, middle, and suffix details can narrow a common name. The Data Status choice can include current or archived records.
OCIS searches covered courts statewide, but it cannot accept payment and does not confirm a warrant's live status. Keep the case number from the result and ask GDC what action the court requires.
| Field | Type | Use | Local note |
|---|---|---|---|
| Court/locality | Selection | Choose the local court | Select Roanoke County GDC. |
| Party name | Text | Name search | Last name required; other name parts narrow results. |
| Case number | Text | Case search | Traffic example pattern: GT########-##. |
| Hearing date | Date | Date search | Use the date on the summons. |
| Data Status | Selection | Older entries | Current, Archived, or All. |
The official GDC help page describes field choices and result details.
A case search gives a record lead. The clerk confirms what is required next.
Inside a Traffic Warrant Record
OCIS can show the court, case number, defendant, offense date, hearing date, charge, and Code section. A GDC case detail may include hearings and payment information when entered. The County Police list has no case number, bond, or status field.
Use the summons number to find the docket, but do not treat the number pattern as a warrant number. Ask GDC whether the case needs payment, an appearance, a bond, or a new date.
| Case number | Traffic format example: GT########-##; this is not a personal case number. |
|---|---|
| Charge and dates | OCIS may show the charge, Code section, offense date, and hearing date. |
| Issuing court | Roanoke County GDC handles most local traffic cases. |
| Amount and bond | Confirm the balance and bond terms with the clerk or magistrate. |
| Status | Online payment alone does not prove the warrant or court duty is cleared. |
Roanoke County Traffic Warrant Caseload
GDC recorded 12,142 traffic filings from January through August 2024, including traffic infractions, misdemeanors, capias, and show-cause categories. The total is not an open-warrant count. It shows why the exact case category should be confirmed with the clerk before payment.
The same report lists 73 traffic capias filings for that period. It does not say how many remained active later. No current County traffic-warrant total or separate citation-to-warrant portal was located.
Roanoke County Traffic Warrant Payment and Recall
Call the GDC clerk before paying after a missed date. Ask whether the case permits online payment, needs an appearance, has a capias or show-cause order, or requires bond. Virginia payment policy leaves installment and deferred-payment choices to each local court.
Use the court's official payment route only after confirming the case number and amount. A payment receipt is useful, but ask the clerk when the warrant status and any DMV notice will update.
- Confirm the charge, court, balance, next date, and whether an appearance or bond is required.
- If payment is allowed, use the official state or County payment route and save the receipt.
- If the court requires a hearing or bond, ask the clerk where and when to report.
- Ask the clerk to report compliance to DMV when the statute requires it, then confirm the case status.
Warning: Paying an online balance does not by itself prove a warrant is recalled; ask GDC to confirm the court's action.
Traffic Payments Do Not Confirm Clearance
The State payment page and County online-fines page accept certain case payments, but neither is a warrant-status certificate. The State says local courts set their own payment-plan rules. GDC-specific online fees were not isolated in the research, so ask the clerk for the total before submitting money.
If the case requires a court appearance, a payment can satisfy a balance without resolving the missed appearance. Keep the transaction record, then ask the clerk whether the warrant, capias, or show-cause entry has been cleared.
Virginia Courts lists the official traffic and criminal payment route.
The court clerk remains the source for whether payment changed the court status.
Court Compliance Reaches DMV
Under § 46.2-938, certain summons noncompliance can lead to an arrest warrant. If the warrant is returned “not found” or the person misses its return date, the court sends a certificate to DMV. The suspension remains until the court tells DMV that the person appeared under the summons and warrant.
This is a court-to-DMV consequence, not a general driver-record product. Ask GDC what appearance or compliance must be recorded and whether it has sent the notice.
The County explains its local fine and cost payment steps.
Retain the receipt and confirm that the court has recorded the required appearance.
Traffic Warrants, FTA, and License Holds
A traffic warrant is court process. An FTA describes a missed appearance or written response. A DMV suspension can follow specified noncompliance and remains until the court reports that the person appeared. These are related but not identical steps.
The statute treats an infraction differently from other summons violations. Ask GDC which rule and status apply to the exact case, then confirm any required court notice to DMV.
| Mechanism | What Triggers It | What It Does |
|---|---|---|
| Traffic warrant | Specified summons noncompliance | Authorizes arrest and returns to the court. |
| Infraction FTA | Failure to respond or appear | May be heard in absence under § 19.2-258.1; no warrant for that infraction. |
| DMV suspension | Unserved warrant or missed return date under § 46.2-938 | Continues until court notice of appearance. |
Roanoke County Traffic Warrant DMV Notice
Under Virginia Code § 46.2-938, failure to comply with a summons or notice can lead to a warrant and a DMV license-suspension process. The court may report the required information after the person appears, and DMV action depends on that court notice. A payment receipt alone may not show that the court has recorded compliance.
Call the GDC clerk at 540-387-6168 with the case number and ask whether a warrant, appearance, payment, or show-cause step remains. If the court says the matter is complete, ask when it will report compliance to DMV and what proof to keep. These are court and DMV records, not a general driver-history inquiry.
